Outside Gethsemane

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the atonement and how hard it must have been for our Heavenly Parents not to run to their Son, and allow Him to become our Savior. I’m not yet a parent myself, but my maternal instinct kicks into high gear anytime I see a child so much as get a skinned knee. I feel the need to run to them and be sure they feel comforted and loved. How hard it must have been to suppress those desires (magnified, I’m sure, more than I can comprehend in our Heavenly Parents) and stand by to allow the plan progress. I feel certain that it was only their love for us, their desire for our return home that helped them hold back. I’m so grateful for the sacrifice of the Atonement in our lives and the comfort, forgiveness, and love we receive daily because of it.

“We are created in the image of our heavenly parents; we are God’s spirit children. Therefore, we have a vast capacity for love—it is part of our spiritual heritage. What and how we love not only defines us as individuals; it also defines us as a church. Love is the defining characteristic of a disciple of Christ.”
– Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf
